Project Description

205 East 22nd Street (The Gramercy Habitat)
Gramercy Park, New York, NY

Project Description

We are excited to recreate the corridors in this former brewery-turned-condo in Gramercy Park. With their original wood beam ceilings, exposed brick walls, and massive north and east facing windows, the units inside this unique structure retain much of the brewery’s original aesthetic.

The lobby was redesigned in recent years adding a modern touch. Our team was retained to perform a complete ceiling and corridor redesign with all new finishes and fixtures. Of great concern to the shareholders was how to blend the mismatched ceilings of the east and west wing, originally two separate buildings. We thoroughly enjoyed the design challenge this unification brought to the project.

We opted to create a soft, industrial, and modern feel in the hallways, allowing us to preserve and enhance the existing character of the building.

Corridors:

  • Wood panel treatment at the elevator landings to correlate with the exposed wood beams in the apartments.
  • Custom-designed signage, mirrors, wallcovering, and benches accented with bronze and steel to mimic the steel mounting hardware of the wood beams.
  • Modern chair rail, carpet pattern, and color palette to merge the original character with contemporary flare.

Ceilings:

  • Raise and flatten the angled ceiling in the west wing utilizing the 2 feet of air space just above it.
  • Installed recessed downlighting throughout all corridors.
  • Installed crown molding with cove lighting throughout corridors and vestibule to create consistency and flow.

Creating custom designs to fit the needs of our clients is one of our passions. We believe it should fit the architecture of the building as well as the client’s style and vision. When you’re ready to redesign your space, we want to be your design team.
